Hey everyone! This post is for anyone who is confused about the game mechanics or just want to know more about how things work in the Backrooms. I suggest that you see the in-game tutorial as well.

Controls

PC (Windows, Linux, Mac):

• Walk: A,D,W,S or Arrow keys
• Look: Moving the mouse
• Run: Left shift (only in the free mode)

Android phones and tablets (Android TV or chromebooks are not supported):

• Use the corresponding buttons on the screen to walk, look around and run (running is only for the free mode)

VR:

• See the SteamVR menu for viewing and configuring controls.

Classic mode

This is the first mode that the Backrooms was originally published in. Here is the guide on how to play in this mode:

1- You start with one of the 4 difficulty settings: Easy, Medium, Hard and BACKROOMS (Very Hard) which differ in the time you have to escape, enemy spawning time, back stab time and how much gap time is between the finish object sounds.

2- Your objective is to find a way out. (by getting close to a "finish object" which is a random object that changes color rapidly)

3- Finish objects make a special sound which is different from the enemies' sound. You must find the direction by listening carefully. This is why stereo headphones are required to play in this mode. Their sound plays several times and the time gap between them is based on the difficulty level. (harder the difficulty, longer the pause)

4- The faster you escape, the more your score will be. There is a timer on the bottom to show you how much time you have. If you run out of time, you will "drown in your nightmares".

5- There are also some enemies (called "friends") that want to kill you :) 

6- "Friends" spawn in 3 ways:

• In front of you
• Behind you
• They don't actually appear, but you hear a sound

7- Whenever "friends" spawn behind you, they "Back stab" you. Meaning that you have a small time (back stab time) before they kill you. 

You will be noticed by a red indicator around the eye. It will look like this ((  👁️  ))

8- You make the "friends" disappear by looking at them for a moment and quickly looking away! (if you look at them for too long, they will kill you!)

The eye opens whenever you see a "friend" and it fills with red to show you how much time you have before you die.

Deaf mode

This is a newer mode that was published along with the Android version to eliminate the need for headphones.

1- You start with one of the 4 difficulty settings: Easy, Medium, Hard and BACKROOMS (very hard) which differ in time you have to escape and enemy spawn time.

2- Your objective is to find a way out. (by getting close to a "finish object" which is a random object that changes color rapidly)

3- You find your way by going through the correct path. The wrong path is indicated to you by changing your character's height, field of view and playing a warning sound when you go through it. (in VR, only your height is changed) If you go through a wrong way, you will "become one of them".

4- The faster you escape, the more your score will be. There is a timer on the bottom to show you how much time you have. If you run out of time, you will "drown in your nightmares".

5- There are also some enemies (called "friends") that want to kill you :) 

6- "Friends" spawn in 2 ways:

• In front of you

Note that in Deaf mode, "friends" won't spawn behind you!

Free mode

The purpose of this mode is to explore the Backrooms "freely" without any enemies or objectives :)

You can use this mode to learn about the map or to record a video without interruptions.
